I really wish I had known 2 years ago that I could start my own SEO consulting business. It would have saved me from many sleepless nights, when I was laid off my full time job. In order to earn a full-time income, I thought my only option was to get a job. I decided that this time would be different. Instead of just taking a J-O-B I was going to do something that I really enjoyed. You see, I had started learning about SEO and doing SEO for my own websites as a hobby several years before, so I thought I would get a job doing SEO for a local company. I applied for several SEO jobs but found the market slammed with job seekers and very few open positions. I also found my expertise in using SEO to drive traffic to my own websites didn’t compare to that of a seasoned SEO professional. You see, I had been doing SEO for over 3 years but only on my own websites and for marketing affiliate products.

The idea of getting a full time job doing what I really enjoyed, Search Engine Optimization was not going to happen, (at least not a traditional job.) then I remembered what I told myself when I was laid off. I was going to find a way to do something I enjoyed and never be in a position to be forced to look for a job again. I was determined to create a secure future for my family.

I couldn't even think about getting another job and running the risk of getting another phone call that put me and my family’s financial futures in jeopardy. Sure I could get another sales job and continue my career of making money for some corporation, but at the end of the day I would still be in the same situation…vulnerable.

I wanted to work for myself and do SEO!

"There has to be some way for me to do SEO and make the kind of money I needed to support my family!”

So I started working seriously on my affiliate marketing business. I built review sites and sold Clickbank products, took some courses on CPA marketing, drove traffic to those sites using the SEO techniques I had learned and started making a little money.

I was working 12 hours a day building sites, driving traffic to them selecting niche markets to get into and was only able to generate a few thousand dollars per month. Time was running out “I may have to get another job!”

It was at that point that I found a few companies that were offering SEO services to local businesses.

Selling SEO services for Reach Local or Yellow Pages would be a perfect job, so I thought. I would be able to talk with businesses about SEO and driving traffic to their sites, which is something I love doing and I could sell, something I have become expert at after over 15 years of sales experience. Certainly this is something that I could make work for me. But the more I thought about it the more I started to wonder wouldn’t this still put me in the same precarious position that I was already in!

I didn't want to dedicate myself to another company only to build their business and not have any real security for me and my family. Did I really want to put myself in that position again? That would be crazy!

And what about security? I had just been laid off by a company that I worked for, for 6 years. Did I really want to start all over again and risk being the last hired first fired?

For weeks, I wrestled with my decision on what I was going to do to support my family. I just wanted to do something that I enjoyed that provided the security that my family deserved.

I was at the end of my rope. "There has got to be a way to make my dream a reality!"
