Freelance Writing For Magazines
Writing for magazines is a great place to freelance because you can earn a good paycheck writing cover stories, features, how-to articles, interview pieces, product or travel destination reviews, and other types of articles. Plus, your byline will promote yourself as a freelance writer to the public.
Follow these tips:
TIP #1: Most of the articles you will write for magazines will be between 800-1500 words.
TIP #2: Know the magazine before you submit your article. There’s nothing worse than submitting an article with the wrong style, topic, or editorial slant to an editor who doesn’t publish that kind of article.
TIP #3: If you aren’t familiar with the magazine editor and the editor isn’t familiar with you, then submit a non-seasonal article (not specific to a time frame) for consideration.
TIP #4: Once you have written your article, study the Internet for the best possible way to write query letters or proposals.
TIP #5: Plan out your article in a well-organized, thoughtful manner. Editors want strong openings and fantastic conclusions.
TIP #6: Pitch an article or query letter to one of the many departments in the magazine. Writing short articles for departments or topic-specific sections is easier to break into.
TIP #7: Articles for print must be better than the articles you write for the web, especially SEO content. Editors expect exceptional work. These days editors expect you to interview sources, gather facts from newsworthy sources, and provide photos or illustrations to accentuate your article. However, with more and more newbie editors coming onto the scene to start a magazine with family money, try to keep your options limited to magazines with good, stable editors who know the business. For instance, freelance writers consider established newsstand magazines as the upper echelon of magazines in the industry. Approach them first. The pay will be better and so will the exposure for you as a writer.
TIP #8: Know your audience. If you don’t know your audience, you will not be able to write material aimed at the magazine’s readership.
TIP #9: Know what will interest your readers. For example, High Roller Magazine does initiate sales from High Rollers, or at least people who consider themselves to be high rollers. Covering articles on choice destinations with great rooms or a highly profiled tournament should appeal to an editor of a magazine such as this.
TIP #10: Know what topics are highest in demand.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
For detailed submission guidelines of many magazine, F&W Publications publishes annual market directories, such as the popular Writer’s Market. These annual directories can offer some submission guidelines. I recommend you subscribe to Writer’s Market Online, where the publishers routinely update listings and guidelines for magazines and other markets. If you want to sell what you write and make money as a freelance writer, you need Writer’s Market Online. In addition to listing magazines that are open for submissions, Writer’s Market Online also lists writing opportunities for syndicate services, websites, annual specialty magazines, and special one-shot publications. FreelanceWriting.com also maintains a free database of magazines that pay freelance writers for articles.
You can use Google to find magazines, websites, and other media outlets that hire freelance writers. Use the phrase “writer’s guidelines” and/or “submission guidelines” in the search box. You may also want to add a modifier to your search, such as “pets,” or “travel,” or “technology,” etc., depending on what markets you want to find.
By knowing the names of editors and publishers, how to contact them, and what their current editorial needs are, you are that much closer to selling your articles. Furthermore, these directories provide hints and tips on how to submit your material. Each editor and each magazine has different editorial needs and how they accept pitches from outside freelance writers.
Since offline magazines receive hundreds of submissions a month from writers, you must submit your work professionally. If you don’t know what editors look for in their submissions, you need to read a couple of the issues. Most, if not all, magazines are available at your local bookstore or supermarket. Buy a copy. Visit each magazine’s website (all of them have one) to review their editorial calendar, articles they have recently published, and what they are covering in their next issue and future issues. Each magazine’s website will give you valuable hints and insight about what editors are publishing and what they are looking for.
Print magazines are not your only market to sell your articles. Many online magazines are sprouting up on the Internet, and their editorial needs are the same as print publications. The field is wide open.

What Is Freelance Poker Writing?
There are many popular casino-style games, but nothing matches the growth and popularity of poker and how poker influences society. Poker writing covers limitless topics in the gaming world; and poker writing can be a blend of journalism, feature writing, sports writing, entertainment writing, travel writing, food writing, technical writing, and so on, depending on what you choose to write.
WHAT DOES FREELANCE POKER WRITING INCLUDE?
You might think “freelance poker writing” is exactly that: writing about poker games. You might also think poker writing is about writing for one specific market: poker magazines. This might have been true years ago, but not so today. The expanding market of online and offline poker and gaming magazines is one small fragment, out of dozens of paying markets, to find freelance work. The Internet has spawned many online writing opportunities, such as blogging, writing for poker and gaming websites, self-publishing, and writing SEO articles for companies and affiliates. And “poker writing” is more than writing about the games of poker. Poker writing encompasses the influences of poker, such as entertainment, technology, psychology, law, lifestyle, money, travel, and so on. Writing about poker and gaming, along with their influences on society, is limitless.
Many successful freelance writers tap into an arsenal of online and offline media outlets to sell their work, not just to poker and gaming magazines. Their recipe for success is simple: they write varied topics related to poker and gaming that don’t just fit into a specific poker magazine, but also fit (with some reslanting) into many other non-poker magazines and media outlets (i.e. trade magazines, regional magazines, newsletters, tourism guides, newspapers, websites, blogs, ebooks, etc.) that cover varied subjects (such as gambling, gaming, professional sports, sports betting, travel, lifestyle, women’s issues, money, finance, real estate, hobbies, and so on).
WHY POKER IS ON THE MINDS OF SO MANY PEOPLE
To write about poker, you need to know why it is on the minds of so many people. Why all the excitement? What do players see in a little game of cards? Many people fall in love with playing poker because it challenges the mind; poker games are thrilling and competitive; and let’s face it, we love the winnings. The winnings in poker games, even online, can trail with many zeros. What other game can you play with a $40 entry fee and win a couple of hundred thousand dollars, or as with WSOP winners, several million? It’s what lures the crowds to the game. Once players begin to play, everyone is a legend in their own mind. The enticement and excitement of winning drives players to want to play more. Typically, players just play more and more once they discover Texas Hold’em.
Even if you aren’t playing poker for the money, you will quickly become aware of the jackpots of money that poker players play for online and offline. Many people play poker because of the great challenges of the mind. Amarillo Slim (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amarillo_Slim), another legendary poker player once said, “Poker is a game of people….It’s not the hand I hold, it’s the people that I play with.” Most of the older players do play with dollar signs glinting in their eyes. On the other hand, if you read some of the articles written about Slim in the past, you’ll discover he enjoyed beating his opponents as much as anyone else.
Guru.com, CraigsList.com and Elance.com showcase job postings for many different freelance opportunities. If you have the skills to write on gambling, specifically poker, then you’ll never be short on writing gigs.
In fact, a search on a handful of job boards produced many writing opportunities, from blog posting, to writing articles on poker games and strategies.
POKER WRITING OPPORTUNITIES
If you want to write about poker and gaming, the opportunities are there. If you are educated about poker and you can write well, the opportunities will be endless. However, you have to be better than average to earn a decent income as freelance poker writer. You must know your “stuff” in this field.
Writing about poker and its players requires you to learn about the games of poker and about the players whom people want to read. For instance, Doyle Brunson and Amarillo “Slim” Preston are two old timers who many consider two of the last living legends of the game. However, Brunson pulls a crowd more so than Preston. People look for articles, books and information on Doyle Brunson because he is still an active player in Las Vegas. Furthermore, Brunson lives where poker rooms are on every corner, whereas Amarillo Slim lives in, well, you guessed it-Texas!
A freelance poker writer has many opportunities. For starters, a poker writer can write from home because of the online games and tournaments. The online poker rooms (the ones offering the large satellite tournaments) are newsworthy as are many of the sit and go tournaments that offer large purses. Writers find ample topics and stories to pull from in this capacity alone. People want to read what’s going on in the online poker rooms. As a new writer, you need to write as much as you can on the subject of poker no matter where people play it.
In addition to the newsworthy opportunities online, web content is a huge marketplace for freelance writers. Writers who can write content-rich articles related to poker and gambling are in high demand.
To succeed as a poker writer, you will need to find your niche. However, you don’t necessarily have to stay within your niche market. Many writers will write on poker and cover online and offline games. They’ll cover the World Poker Tour for an offline gambling magazine one day and write an informative “How to Spot a Poker Cheat” article the next day for an online website. Poker writers like the ability to remain diverse but it pays to have a niche.
For example, there are several writers on Elance.com who write web content for gaming websites but still pick up a couple of writing gigs offline in magazines and for newspaper articles. Respectively, several notorious authors and professional poker players write primarily as book authors and authorities on their game but occasionally they will snatch a writing column for an online poker website.
Don’t fool yourself into thinking the gigs you have online will allow the offline writing jobs to fall in your lap. You have to keep your options open. You will need to apply for most of the work you get, even after you become well-known within the industry. However, if you’re good, you’ll very seldom face competition for the writing jobs you want.
When you become established in your niche, clients, editors and colleagues will willingly generate referrals for you. In fact, if you are well-informed and can stand out as a leading authority on poker, you can create your own jobs if jobs don’t randomly come your way. You’ll be able to query an editor with ideas and convince the editor to publish your articles. You may be able to query a book publisher with a manuscript idea and have it accepted for publication.
In addition, the offline writing jobs on assignment are often lucrative. Most of the writing jobs on assignment will allow you to live like a high roller, or at the very least, a low roller with some great perks. Poker writers normally stay where the action takes place, which is commonly in a casino. If you’re covering a World Poker Tour event, you’ll likely stay in upgraded casino accommodations; after all, the casino knows you are writing on the event and they’ll likely want you to plug their plush rooms and their many amenities.
On assignment writing jobs will enable you to eat in marvelous dining restaurants, stay among the upper echelon of poker players in suites or upgraded rooms and enjoy hosted parties among poker players. Writing on assignment as a poker writer enables writers to stay in some of the most elegant resorts in the world while enjoying the lifestyle of the pampered poker player. And trust it when you see it in magazines and hear about it online, these professional players are pampered.
Before you obtain your first job assignment as a poker writer, you need to learn all you can about poker. Read everything there is to read. Listen to everything and anything you can on the subject. Flip on the TV set and watch some live game coverage and learn the terminology. Poker tournaments and poker coverage are constantly on TV, especially in the evenings and on weekends.
PERKS OF A FREELANCE POKER WRITER
Poker writers who travel to some of the casino destinations hosting world events such as the WSOP (http://www.worldseriesofpoker.com) or the WPT (World Poker Tour – http://www.worldpokertour.com ) find they can enjoy a lifestyle many freelance writers dream about. Not every freelance writer can endure the schedule of these writers. However, if you are a writer who can face the unpredictable scheduling of events in the World Series of Poker, have a great personality and excellent people skills, then your chances to live a jet-set lifestyle in the world of poker is better than what many writers might think.
Life is better as a poker writer than it is in most areas of writing. You will be rubbing shoulders with people in Sin City and many other casino destinations where money is no object. Remember, money is no object to a great number of poker players. Stakes are always high. With that in mind, remember who you are and where you are. Remember to capture the story, and not the party.
You will get a free ride pass as a poker writer if you can achieve a name for yourself in the poker world. You will have the things only high rollers can get just because the right people want YOU to remember their name. Naturally, this will only happen after you become recognized as a poker authority. If you strive to achieve it, you will know what the inside of the suites at the MGM and Paris Las Vegas look like because you’ll be staying in them. You won’t walk or hail a cab in Vegas. You’ll be riding in a limo, free of charge. Best of all, when you are on a job, you will drink and eat what you want and never see a bill. Welcome to success. Revel in it and know you’ve worked hard for it.

SEO Writing Involves Writing Keyword
Many entrepreneurs, small and private businesses, and individual affiliates, hire freelance writers for SEO writing (also known as “search engine optimization” writing). SEO writing involves writing keyword-rich articles to rank the client’s website higher in search engines and generate more website traffic. SEO articles are less informative and less entertaining than articles you would write for magazines.
If you want to see examples of SEO articles, browse through any of the online article distribution directories. For more details go to www.search-engine-premiere.com You will notice many of the SEO articles range in length between 500 and 700 words and paragraphs often repeat with selected keywords.
My friend, Peter Callahan, likes to write sports-related material for the Internet. Many writers, like Peter, write material to inform, entertain and educate readers. Some writers understand clients hire them to write web content for web pages (SEO writing) to ensure higher search engine placement. In many cases, these writers still provide quality-written work for SEO.
However, if a client requests the writer to provide keyword-stuffed articles with a certain (keyword) density, then the writer is at the mercy of the client. Crafting keyword-stuffed sentences into a well-written article is hard. Still, both article types – magazine-quality articles and SEO articles – pay the bills. If you become a freelance writer who can swing to one type and then back to the next, then you will receive steady paychecks. The commodity you need will be time.
Here are a few things you should know if you decide to write magazine-quality articles or SEO content for websites:
1. Web content will likely range from 100-1000 words depending on what your client wants.
2. It will either be keyword-enriched or informative. Ask your client what his goals are and what he wants to accomplish with his articles.
3. Topics will range around keywords in most cases.
4. If quantity is worth more than quality to your client, then make sure you protect yourself. Don’t use your name. Use a pen name. There’s nothing worse than to ghostwrite a lot of keyword-stuffed articles aimed at search engines, and then to hit a major book deal and find your client had (accidentally) attached your byline to those non-informative, (almost) meaningless keyword-stuffed articles. For more details go to www.sitemap-makers.com Publishers will frown on this.
5. Topics for web content are wide-ranging.
Writers who write SEO content are in high demand. These writers often have 20+ jobs waiting in line for them at a time because clients will wait on them to do the job right.
SEO writing is an excellent way to break into freelance writing but it will not make you a recognized writer. Most of what you will write will be from the technical angle of search engine optimization.

WRITING SEO ARTICLES
Writers who write SEO content are in high demand. These writers often have 20+ jobs waiting in line for them at a time because clients will wait on them to do the job right.
SEO writing is an excellent way to break into freelance writing but it will not make you a recognized writer. Most of what you will write will be from the technical angle of search engine optimization.
A client in search of SEO material will submit a list of keywords focused on a specific term or category. The writer uses these keywords and writes keyword-stuffed articles using variations of these keywords
Usually clients who want SEO writing will request a certain number of words per article. If a client hires you to write a large batch of articles, you will want to range the lengths from 150 words to 1000 words. From my experience, SEO articles shouldn’t go beyond 525 words.
Writing SEO content is a wonderful way to make some great money but it won’t do anything great for you as a writer. In fact, SEO article writing can often hinder your talents if you stay with it long enough because it simply isn’t the best work out there to help you prove yourself as a freelance writer.
If you decide to write keyword-stuffed articles, you’ll need to know more than just the topic. You’ll need to write articles using specific keywords to help your clients rank higher on search engines, most specifically, Google.com. By doing this more people will see your client’s website and go to the site more frequently.
As an SEO writer, you will need to know the rules for density rates and so forth. This can be done by doing a search on “keyword density checkers” or “free keyword density checkers.” Find one that is user friendly. Run your articles through these density checkers to determine their keyword density. Clients will want to see articles with varying density. To ensure the best possible articles for SEO content, always use various keywords.
With the Internet adding more and more web pages, you can make a lot of money in web content. However, just because you are a talented writer doesn’t mean you will pick up the knack for writing SEO articles successfully. You will need to research SEO writing thoroughly to do it correctly.
Affiliates often hire writers to write content for their websites. If you want to break into writing for the web, you must know the ins and outs of writing SEO content. We aren’t going to visit those concepts here because you can find many books on the subject. You can also visit many free websites that teach you how to write for search engines.
Here are some tips to write effective SEO content:
TIP # 1: The keyword or keyword phrase should always be in the first line of every paragraph.
TIP # 2: If you are doing keyword articles as a ghostwriter, make sure you have a contract with your client stating he will not use your byline. You don’t want magazine editors or loyal readers to recognize you for writing non-informative keyword-stuffed articles. At the same time, SEO writing is a necessary skill if you want to make a lot of money in writing web content.
TIP # 3: Use Google’s keyword tool to see what keywords connect with other keywords or phrases. You can take Google’s keyword suggestions and use them in your article so your client’s website will rank higher in search engines. Google’s tool enables you to capture some of the keywords associated with a phrase, as requested by the client. If you learn to research which words can pull the most “hits” on the search engines, you’ll become more valuable to your client.
TIP # 4: Take the keyword phrase and use it in several variations.
TIP # 5: When a client hires you to write web content, ask what the client’s goals are because he may want SEO articles, or he may want informative, well-written articles, or he may want both.
FINDING SEO WRITING GIGS
1) Most clients who need SEO writers post their needs on Elance.com, Guru.com and GetAFreelancer.com, and let writers bid for the projects. Clients will tell you how many articles they require; the word length; the topics; keywords; and sometimes the keyword-density.
2) SEO has become an enormously popular type of writing and the demand is huge. Because of the huge demand, we now have many established SEO writing companies, instead of individual freelancers, that provide these same services. These SEO writing companies always recruit outside freelance writers. If you want to write SEO copy and don’t want to bid on SEO projects, then do a search on Google for SEO writing companies and contact the persons in charge for a freelance position.
3) Search Google News for press releases announcing new websites. Visit these new websites and contact the person in charge. These new websites always need SEO writing.
4) Search through the Elance Service Providers at Elance.com and contact freelance graphic designers and see if you can pair up your skills with theirs.
5) Search the search engines, jobbanks, such as FreelanceWriting.com, and advertise your skills as an SEO writer on your own website.

Things to Know Before Starting a Freelance Writing Business
One of the common misconceptions is that if you can write, you can easily start a freelance writing business. However, like other types of businesses freelance writing involves developing a business strategy as well as having good writing skills. You can be a great writer, but if you do not have the skills needed for today’s market such as writing web content, SEO (Search Engine Optimized) articles, or other marketing materials you will find it difficult to truly succeed and make money.
However, the good news is if you invest some time in learning the tricks of the trade of freelance writing, you could eventually make a decent living from it. As a freelance writer, there are many online writing jobs available, from writing copy for websites, articles, blogs, newsletters, and much more. The Internet is fast becoming the main source for information and there are so many websites popping up every single week. Developing online writing skills is definitely an avenue to pursue.
Here are some things to consider before embarking on a freelance writing career:
1. Are you disciplined?
How disciplined are you? Do you have experience writing to meet deadlines? How many hours of writing can you reasonably do per day? Can you write when you don’t feel like it? These are important questions to answer early on. If you have very little experience then first write an article about a subject that you know and time yourself. Also, do the same for a subject you are interested in but requires a bit of research. After you are done, ask yourself if you could see yourself doing this all day. A big misconception is that you have complete freedom when you freelance. But the reality is, you still have to work daily in order to be successful and earn money.
2. Can you sell yourself?
How good are you at selling yourself? Do you have a good-sized social network? If not, are you comfortable building one? Although you may be a very good writer, many people besides your existing clients have to know about you. Before you start freelancing develop a marketing strategy. Some writers start with having their own website and/or blog. Also, they use every opportunity to tell those in their network about their skills or send links to their work. So having a Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter presence are all great marketing tools.
3. Can you write about anything?
Of course, as a writer you want to write about subjects that are interesting to you, but in the beginning you might be called on to write about things outside your knowledge level or simply topics you have no interest in whatsoever. Once you gain more experience, you can choose to only pursue certain topics but sometimes this is not always possible.
4. Do you know what you are worth?
Rates for writing vary widely and depend on a number of different factors. Before you start stating your rates, do your research about the going rate. For example, some copywriters earn up to $75 per hour and some as low as $25 per hour. If you are a beginner you may not be able to charge at the highest end of the spectrum, but don’t sell yourself short. Find out what others doing a similar job are charging.
5. What’s your back-up plan?
It is important to have more than one source for freelance writing jobs. Although a certain job site might be great, you should not depend on it to always provide you with work. So research as many avenues as possible. Find out where writers in your area find work, search as many freelance writing sites as possible, and tell everyone you know that you are looking for more work.
